- SUVs under $25k
SUV options are vast for almost every price point, though there are slimmer pickings for those seeking a brand new SUV for less than $25,000 (before on-road charges).
You can find the likes of Hyundai, Kia and Mazda here, though in each case the choice of Hyundai Venue, Kia Stonic or Mazda CX-3 is restricted to base models with manual gearboxes.
Buyers need to go above a $25,000 budget if they want an automatic gearbox or a model featuring all-wheel drive rather than front-wheel drive. A Suzuki Ignis is available with an auto in this pricing category, however, as is the MG ZS that plays strongly on value.
Hyundai Venue
The Hyundai Venue is the smallest, most affordable SUV in the Hyundai line-up. Launched in Australia in 2019, it effectively filling the gap left by the discontinued Accent light car.
The Venue keeps thing simple in terms of variants. There’s one engine choice – a 1.6-litre four-cylinder – and three trim levels, with a six-speed auto available on all three, or a cheaper six-speed manual offered the base and mid-spec models.
Kia Stonic
The Kia Stonic first went on sale in Australia in January 2021, after initially debuting overseas in 2017. It arrived here with a light facelift and new features.
Since its debut, the compact Stonic SUV has proven popular, with nearly 8000 sold in its first year on the Australian market.
Mazda CX-3
Classed as a small SUV until the light segment was introduced in 2020, the CX-3 has consistently been one of the most popular and highly-rated crossovers in terms of presentation and driver enjoyment.
MG ZS
The MG ZS is a small SUV produced by the reborn MG brand, now owned by Chinese giant SAIC.
Launched locally in November of 2017, the MG ZS range currently comprises seven variants, from the combustion ZS Excite to ZST Essence, as well as two battery-electric offerings in the ZS EV Excite and ZS EV Essence.
Suzuki Ignis
The Suzuki Ignis is exceptionally handy in the city but this micro-SUV also gets along nicely on the open road – without using much petrol. It feels roomier than you might expect.
