Looking to capitalise on the growing price-driven EV market in Australia, GWM has keenly priced the 310 kilometre WLTP Ora Standard Range from $43,990, and the Extended Range at $47,990, both before on-road costs.

A flagship GT variant with side stripes, sportier wheels, heated windscreen and memory driver’s seat will headline the range at $53,990 before on-road costs.

Before on-roads, the Ora standard range is dead even with the MG ZS EV Excite. The Ora will also compete against the MG 4 electric hatch and BYD Atto 3 small SUV.

MG offers seven years of capped-price servicing for the ZS EV, though it rises to as high as $757 for one service – and it's also a similar situation for the BYD.

Ora drive-away pricing differs state-by-state, ranging from as low as $44,490 in the NT to $47,891 in WA. See the table for the full breakdown.

While GWM doesn’t expect the Ora to sell in as large numbers as its Haval SUV or Tank off-road models, rival BYD has shown fervour for affordable EVs, with the Atto 3 becoming Australia’s third-best selling electric vehicle behind Tesla Model Y.

“There's a lot of movement in this segment in terms of what competitors are doing”, head of marketing and communications at GWM, Steve Maciver, told Wheels.

"We think the quality in [GWM Ora], the spec that’s in that car, the ownership package of a seven year warranty and roadside assist, capped-price servicing is a very, very compelling customer proposition.”

Power, driving range and charging

All GWM Ora models coming to Australia will feature a single, front-mounted electric motor developing 126kW of power and 250Nm of torque.

With the Standard Range and Extended Range weighing much the same (1540kg/1580kg), both are able to crack 100km/h in 8.4 seconds, according to GWM.

The Standard Range is equipped with a 45.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack provided by CATL for a rated 310km WLTP driving range.

The Ora Extended Range meanwhile, scores a larger 59kWh battery for 420km driving range – identical to a BYD Atto 3.

With its sportier wheels, bumpers and heavy sunroof, the Ora GT’s range claim falls to 400km.

GWM has confirmed an introductory offer with the inclusion of a 6.6kW single-phase home charger included in the price for early Ora adopters.

Safety

The GWM Ora has been awarded five stars in ANCAP safety testing.

Particularly high marks were awarded for adult occupant protection (92 per cent), and safety assistance (93 per cent) criteria.

Dimensions

The GWM Ora measures 4235 millimetres long, 1825mm wide and 1603mm tall, while riding on a 2650mm wheelbase.

That makes it roughly the same size as a typical small car like a Volkswagen Golf, or Toyota Corolla – though the Ora does have a higher roof.

GWM is not marketing the Ora as an SUV despite its tall stature, likely due to its minimal 120mm ground clearance.

The Ora’s boot is small for the class, however, measuring 228-litres (VDA), or 884L with the seats folded. There is no spare tyre under the boot floor.

Warranty and servicing

Following its initial pricing announcement, Great Wall Motors (GWM) confirmed servicing information for its Ora electric hatch in April 2023.

Available for the first five years, each service will be capped at $99.

Maintenance is required every 12 months or 15,000 kilometres, whichever occurs first.

GWM Australia says servicing can be done nationwide at any of its 84 dealerships.
