Audi recalls certain 2019-2021 models over rear axle fault

UPDATE, March 18, 2022: A second recall has been issued by Audi for its A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Q5, Q8 and E-Tron models built between 2019 to 2021.

After the vehicles were previously recalled in September last year (more below), a follow-up recall notice was released due to the repairs potentially causing separate problems.

According to Audi, the replacement rear axle clamping nuts may have caused a misalignment in the rear assembly, leading to potentially higher tyre wear and greater risk of a flat or damaged tyre.

As before, affected owners are encouraged to contact their nearest Audi dealer to arrange an inspection.

September 10, 2021: Audi Australia is recalling several of its models because the rear axle assembly does meet manufacturing standards.

The German carmaker has issued a notice for 1623 of its A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Q5, Q8 and E-Tron cars built between 2019 and 2021.

According to the Department of Infrastructure, some nuts fitted to the rear axle assembly did not meet manufacturing specifications and may break.

If there is a broken nut, it may lead to increased movement between the wishbone and hub carrier and a change in the wheel alignment on the rear axle.

The problem could cause a “sudden uncontrollable movement of the rear axle” – increasing the risk of injury or death to any occupants or other nearby road users in an accident.

Audi is contacting owners of affected vehicles to arrange with their nearest authorised dealership to have the work carried out free of charge.
