To be priced below $300,000, the turbocharged V6 version of the Lamborghini-derived R8 will replace the V8 as the most affordable model in the supercar family.
The V6 – which will sit below the Lamborghini V10 in the Audi R8 family – is believed to be a new generation engine developed in conjunction with Porsche and destined for various Audi RS models, including the upcoming RS4.
“It’s still a secret, but we will bring another engine,” said Stevan Holischka, who is in charge of product marketing for the R8. “We are planning another engine.”
It’s expected to outpunch the outgoing 316kW 4.2-litre atmo V8 for power while comfortably beating its 430Nm of torque.
The new engine – codenamed KoVoMo – will likely be used in unique tunes in upcoming Porsche models including Macan, Panamera and Cayenne.
It’s understood Audi considered an amped-up five-cylinder turbo for performance duties.
However insiders have told Wheels the V6 is the preferred option and is currently undergoing final development.
And the head of V-engine development for Audi, Juergen Konigstedt, gave a strong clue the R8 will move to V6 propulsion over a turbo five.
“From a design point of view a V would be nicer” he told Wheels.
