What you’re looking at is officially the world’s fastest electric car – at least until Nissan’s new Le Mans car runs next year.

Called the Drayson B12 69/EV the electric Le Mans prototype completed an official speed run in England overnight, clocking a top speed of 328.6km/h.

That mark smashed the previous record, set by Battery Box General Electric in 1974, by 47km/h.

Completing two runs down a three kilometre track to secure an average speed, the car’s owner Lord Paul Drayson piloted the bespoke 634kW racer.

“It is not the outright speed of 204.185mph that is most impressive about this record,” he said. “But the engineering challenge of accelerating a 1000kg electric vehicle on a short runway over a measured mile.”
