BMW’s new electric city car has been spied ahead of its official reveal late next month.

It’s not the first time the i3 prototype has been caught testing, but it is the first time we’ve seen the new baby BMW almost entirely without camouflage.

Set to go on sale in Australia in the second-half of 2014, the i3 will be offered in two drivetrain variants.

One will be powered solely by a 125kW all-electric motor, while the other will add a small petrol engine to extend the car’s range.

Only the second, hybrid variant will be offered in Australia.

Early talk suggests the i3 will travel up to 160km on battery power alone.
