After months of spy photos and engineering rumours, BMW has officially unveiled its all-new 4 Series.

Essentially a 3 Series coupe in all but name, the new car is longer, wider, lower and 45kg lighter than its 3 Series predecessor.

Wider tracks front (14mm) and rear (22mm) and a 10mm lower ride height help to drop the car’s centre of gravity, with weight distribution, as ever with BMW, sitting at 50:50.

Built on the latest 3 Series platform, the 4 Series boasts bespoke springs and dampers for a sportier suspension tune.

Three engines will be available from launch – all taken from the current 3 Series line-up – with the 3.0-litre six cylinder to be used in the flagship 435i capable of a 0-100km/h sprint of 5.4 seconds.

All engines will be mated to a six speed manual as standard with the option of an eight-speed auto.

The 4 Series will make its official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September before going on sale here in early 2014.
