A Volkswagen Golf that’s faster than a Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche?

That’s the noise coming out of Germany, with VW just confirming it will reveal a bonkers, 370kW version of its seventh-generation GTI later this week.

It’s all part of VW’s Worthersee festival in Austria – an event used to showcase the brand to enthusiasts.

Dubbed the Design Vision GTI, the one-off concept is powered by a newly-developed twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 – an engine VW says is destined to be used in upcoming models.

Replacing the standard GTI’s iconic 2.0-litre turbo four, the V6 sees power rise by 129 percent from 162kW to a supercar beating 370kW.

Torque is up too, rising from 350Nm to 560Nm – 500 of which is said to be available from just 2000rpm.

Volkswagen claims that sees the Design Vision GTI rocket from 0-100km/h in just 3.9 seconds, with top speed leaping from 244km/h to 300 km/h.

As you’d expect, the standard GTI’s front-wheel-drive system is replaced by all-wheel-drive, with a new dual-clutch gearbox channelling the power to the wheels.

To handle the extra grunt, VW has added 20 inch wheels and made the concept 15mm shorter, 71mm fatter and 57mm lower than the standard car.

It’s not the first time VW has created an ‘extreme’ GTI, unveiling the Golf W12 at the same festival in 2007.

It used a mid-mounted W12 from the Bentley Continental GT.
