MEDIUM SUVs

1ST - BMW X5 3.0d Executive auto
Another photo finish for first saw BMW beat Benz. The X5 is most expensive SUV here, but that’s offset by the best resale potential, affordable insurance, excellent diesel-based fuel economy, unlimited-kilometre warranty, variable service intervals and ticks in every safety box. Which tricks didn’t it turn? None of them. The X5 remains the benchmark for larger SUVs, with excellent performance from the 480Nm 3.0-litre six backed by superb ride quality, high grip levels and great balance. Despite the high price, it remains the most economically rational.

2ND - Mercedes-Benz ML320 CDi (auto)
Everything that was said about the X5 goes for the ML. Only their parents can tell them apart. One reason to choose the ML is that it’s five percent cheaper. It also features slightly greater engine outputs (weight is the same) and a seven-speed auto against the Beemer’s six-speeder.

3RD - Volvo XC90 D5 (auto)
The price is right and resale is up there, but dynamically the big Volvo is off the pace. More importantly, the D5 lacks the variable service intervals of the Germans, and its thirst (and fuel cost) relative to the frugal BMW X5, robs it of a chance to win the category.
