BYD Australia set to remove ‘Build Your Dreams’ badging

‘Build Your Dreams’ no more? The Australian and European divisions have conceded the badge was detracting rather than inspirational

Build Your Dreams (BYD) will remove its polarising badge lettering, starting with 2024 BYD Atto 3 electric SUVs in Australia, WhichCar understands.

  • Removal is a response to customer feedback
  • Applies to Atto 3 hatch and Seal sedan, though not Dolphin hatch

A BYD Auto Australia spokesperson said the move was in response to customer feedback.

The ‘Build Your Dreams’ tailgate script has been contentious, with many Australian owners showcasing their de-badging and modification works online.

It follows the European division confirming to media, including Electrifying [↗] and AutoExpress [↗], that the lettering has been dropped in newly-produced Atto 3 electric SUVs. The Seal sedan will feature ‘discreet badging’ at launch.

In Europe, this means the Seal will only display the make, model and claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time badges on the side, but WhichCar understands Australian market versions could differ when it does launch locally.

However, the affordable BYD Dolphin small electric hatch won’t erase the lettering since it's embedded in a perspex strip within the tail-lights (similar to the Hyundai Ioniq 6 sedan), rather than a simple glued-on badge.

The de-badge will reflect on the BYD Seal U medium electric SUV when it launches in Europe and right-hand drive UK next year.

It could be the next model in line for Australia after the related Seal sedan, with at least one model planned in 2024.

The MG 4-rivalling Dolphin hatch is expected to start deliveries this month or October, with the Model 3-rivalling Seal expected to go on sale before the end of the year.

The Australian importer of BYD electric cars, EVDirect, has also vowed to significantly expand its retail, delivery and servicing presence to keep up with the anticipated rapid growth.
